Accelerating Comms Deployment for Off-The-Grid Emergency Services

A Tier 1 OEM security client approached Slipstream Design with an urgent challenge: maintain LTE communications in environments where GPS is unavailable—without complex, slow-to-deploy hardware that had tripped up other suppliers.
The solution needed not only to perform in real time, but to minimise downtime and accelerate deployment for emergency services operating off-grid.
Slipstream Design responded by developing a compact Frequency Converter for alternative LTE spectrum – engineered not just for performance, but for manufacturing simplicity and rapid configurability.
By combining off-the-shelf LTE modems with our mechanical and electronic design expertise, we created a tightly integrated PCB architecture with a highly stable and accurate clocking reference. Crucially, the design eliminated the need for post-production RF tuning, significantly reducing manufacturing time, cost, and variability.
We further streamlined production through standard tooling, minimal rejigging, and automated milling processes, enabling efficient scaling to high volumes without introducing bottlenecks.
To support operational flexibility, we implemented a simple USB interface for real-time monitoring and fast channel switching, allowing modules to be quickly reconfigured and redeployed as requirements evolve.
The result: a robust, rapidly deployable communications solution – smaller than a mobile phone—designed to keep emergency services connected, while dramatically reducing both production complexity and time-to-field.
