How Flexible Working Supports Real Life at Slipstream Design

04/12/2025

Flexible working has become a natural part of how we operate at Slipstream Design, shaped by the realities our team deals with every day.

Behind every project is someone balancing family commitments, health, long journeys, or simply the unexpected things life throws in. And while the traditional 9–5 assumes life happens neatly around the edges, we know that isn’t really how things work.

Rather than pretending everything can be contained outside office hours, we try to make room for it.

Below, five team members share what flexible working looks like day to day, and the difference it makes to their work and home life.

Putting Health First — Sophie’s Story

“The understanding that we’re all human — and health comes first — is what makes the biggest difference.”

For Sophie, our Comms & Marketing Coordinator, flexible working is about being able to manage her health without added pressure.

Living with endometriosis means some days need a different approach. Working from home during flare-ups, shifting hours for appointments, or simply having the breathing room to rest when she needs to — it all helps her stay on top of both her wellbeing and her workload. Clear, honest communication within the team means she never feels like she’s falling behind.

Her experience reflects a simple belief: people shouldn’t have to choose between feeling well and doing great work.

Sharing Parenting Properly — Stuart’s Story

“I didn’t have to choose between being a good dad and doing a job I really care about.”

Stuart, our Digital Team Leader, wanted to be fully involved as a parent while still progressing in his career. Flexible working makes that balance possible.

With a young daughter and a long commute, being able to do school runs, work from home some days, or adjust his hours when needed gives him space to be present at home without sacrificing focus at work. It’s one of the reasons he joined Slipstream Design in the first place — knowing both sides of life could sit comfortably together.

Making Long Commutes Work — Matt’s Story

“Working from home a couple of days a week is huge — it’s an all-round win.”

Matt is one of our longest commuters, so hybrid working plays a key part in keeping things balanced.

Working from home a couple of days a week saves time, supports deep-focus tasks, and gives him more time with his family (and their dogs). But he still values the collaboration and problem-solving that happens naturally in the office. Flexibility gives him the best of both worlds.

Work That Fits Around Real Life — David’s Story

“I turn up to work a bit later than most… and that extra breathing space makes a huge difference.”

For David, our Mechanical & Quality Team Lead, the biggest impact comes from flexible hours.

Our early-to-late opening means people can start at the time that suits them. For David, arriving slightly later gives him the space to sort things at home and begin the day in the right headspace. It’s a small shift, but one that sets up the rest of the day to run more smoothly.

The Balance of Leadership and Motherhood — Sarah’s Story

“Flexibility helps me give my best to both the business and my family.”

As our Commercial Director, Sarah carries big responsibilities. As a mum, she carries different ones. Flexible working made it possible to grow both without sacrificing either.

From newborn to teenage parenting, she’s seen how flexible hours and adaptable working locations can transform what everyday life feels like. It’s helped her build the business and team she loves while still being present for her daughter through every stage.

Why It All Matters

Across all five stories, one theme stands out: flexibility isn’t about working less — it’s about working in a way that supports people to do their best.

It helps people:

  • Be present for their families
  • Manage health without stigma
  • Balance long commutes
  • Work where they focus best
  • Stay steady through life’s changing stages
  • Trust one another to bring their best

At Slipstream Design, flexibility isn’t something people have to earn. It’s something we build into our culture, because the best work happens when people feel supported as human beings, not just employees.
